Beyond the standard hand-in-for-a-grade, consider other ways to have students publish their stories. Or if the story was a fairy tale, suggest that the child write his or her own version.

You can make a storyboard by having a child draw a series of pictures of the main events in the story on sticky notes and then asking him or her to arrange the pictures in order. They will be reading this model as writers, looking at how the author shaped the text for a purpose, so that they can use those same strategies in their own writing.

Students are natural storytellers; learning how to do it well on paper is simply a matter of studying good models, then imitating what those writers do. The middle?
